A black teenager said she was the victim of a hate crime after a group of fellow students allegedly beat her up for having a white boyfriend.
The Atlanta, Ga. teens beat up Jacqueline Flournoy, 18, who suffers from a hearing impairment, reports the New York Post. Video of the incident shows two teens punching and pulling the hair of the disabled teenager while a third person films the video and encourages the teenagers to keep attacking.
According to Flournoy, the beating came because she was dating a white guy. The teens allegedly made a series of negative comments about the interracial relationship, Flournoy said.
“I think it was hate,” Flournoy said. “They were just being spiteful and mean. They wanted to make a video about it and go viral.”
The students are reportedly facing a suspension from Maynard Jackson High School and went before a school committee Wednesday to decide their punishment and if they will be suspended for a year or a semester for their actions, according to reports.
Flournoy’s mother posted the footage of the incident on Facebook and called for parents to teach their children respect.
“Parents, [you] need to talk to your children. I mean, it’s bad enough that adults treat each other like this, but for kids to do it, they’re learning it from someone,” the mother said.
