Weed Dispensaries Look To Rake In On Black Friday Mania

Marijuana dispensaries are slashing prices for their first Black Friday in Nevada since voters approved legalizing recreational weed in a ballot vote last year.

Recreational sales officially began across the state in July and are proving more lucrative than initial sales in Oregon, Colorado and Washington, the first states to fully legalize marijuana. Dispensaries sold roughly $27.1 million worth of weed in July, nearly doubling first month sales in Colorado.

Seizing off this popularity more than 40 dispensaries in Las Vegas are cutting prices for Black Friday shoppers, reports the Las Vegas Sun. Everything from standard flower to edible products are being marked down for adults age 21 and up, who are legally allowed to purchase up to an ounce of cannabis.

“It’s a great stocking-stuffer, and now you can treat it like alcohol in that regard,” state Sen. Tick Segerblom, who helped push Nevada towards legalization, told the Las Vegas Sun. “As long as no kids can get to it. It’s for adults only.”

Some stores are offering a buy-one-get-one-free deal on edible cannabis products and are giving shoppers nearly 50 percent off on an eighth of an ounce of their flower products. Others are giving away free products with every store purchase, with one dispensary in Las Vegas gifting shoppers with a 10-pack of fruit chew edibles. “Cannabis use has been misunderstood and vilified in our country for over 80 years, so this day will feel both surreal and celebratory,” Andrew Jolley, president of the Nevada Dispensary Association, told the Las Vegas Sun. “We’re very excited about the first holiday season of adult-use in Nevada.”

Holidays throughout the year are marked with big increases in demand for weed. Marijuana deliveries skyrocketed on Dec. 23, 2016, by 23 percent when compared to yearly norms and jumped 6 percent Christmas Eve. The day before Thanksgiving last year proved a massive success for marijuana businesses, with sales increasing 71 percent. The demand was so high that marijuana dispensaries referred to the day as Green Wednesday.

Experts cite family stress as part of the reason for an increase in demand around the holidays, but some also argue it’s a reflection of changing perceptions of the substance as more states around the U.S. pass legalization.
