Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the state of Missouri on Tuesday, joining ranks with the Satanic Temple who’s lawsuit alleging that Missouri’s abortion laws are unconstitutional is headed to the state’s Supreme Court.
Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, like the Satanists, say that Missouri’s mandatory waiting period for women seeking abortions unfairly restricts a woman’s access to reproductive healthcare, filing their lawsuit Tuesday to drive their point home and attempt to affect a change in law according to the Associated Press.
Filed Tuesday, their lawsuit falls on the same day the state Supreme Court announced it would hear the Satanist’s case after a Missouri Court of Appeals judge ruled that the 72 hour waiting period violates religious freedom, according to the Washington Post.
Planned Parenthood and the ACLU’s lawsuit follows their previous fight to gain licensing for four more clinics to provide abortions, according to The Kansas City Star. Their suit pairs nicely with the Satanic Temple’s suit, and it remains to be seen if the groups will decide to actively work together to achieve goals they share.
Planned Parenthood Missouri did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment in time for publication, and so far they have not made any statements disavowing their alliance with the Satanic Temple.
