Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly despises U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley.
Haley is seen as an effective U.S. diplomat who can get things done in a pinch, a senior administration official told The New Yorker. She played a crucial role in rallying international support for tougher sanctions against North Korea after the regime’s test of an intercontinental ballistic missile and subsequent test of a staged thermonuclear bomb.
“Nikki’s getting it done,” the official explained, “She’s bringing home the bacon.” There is reportedly growing tension between Tillerson and Haley. “He hates her. He f***king hates her,” the official revealed.
Tillerson has been largely sidelined, if not regularly undermined, in President Donald Trump’s foreign policy agenda. The tightening of sanctions on North Korea, was achieved by Haley, and other notable accomplishments have been in the military.
Tillerson has worked hard to find a peaceful, diplomatic solution to the North Korea problem, but the president’s impromptu tweets and comments have complicated his job. Trump has on multiple occasions threatened to rain down “fire and fury” on North Korea, “totally destroy” the regime, and “devastate” the country after Tillerson tried to emphasize to Pyongyang that the U.S. is not a threat. Tillerson has sought dialogue with North Korea, yet Trump has repeatedly statedthat talking to North Korea is a waste of time.
Some suspect the president and his secretary of state are playing a game of good cop/bad cop on the international stage to keep states on their toes and convince countries to act in a way that furthers America’s national interests. Others, however, suspect that there is a divide between Trump and Tillerson.
Secretary of Defense James Mattis recently revealed that the division is not as gaping as some media outlets are interpreting it to be, and the secretary of state denied being at odds with the president in a public press conference Thursday after reports came out that he called Trump a “f***king moron” this past summer, accusations that he dismissed but did not deny.
The state department remains understaffed, and key positions, such as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, remain vacant, hindering Tillerson’s ability to carry out the administration’s foreign policy objectives effectively.
