House Republicans are expected to gather next Wednesday for a tax policy retreat to discuss the details on how they plan to overhaul the tax code.
GOP lawmakers in the lower chamber will gather off Capitol Hill for a half-day retreat. The event comes as Republicans gear up to unveil a consensus document outlining the provisions agreed upon by the House, Senate, and White House.
The party has recently amped up its messaging efforts on the issue in hopes of helping the push gain traction with constituents.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and National Economic Adviser Gary Cohn have been meeting for months in an attempt to reach an agreement that can attract broad support throughout the conference.
“Tax reform is the most important thing we can do right now to help American families get ahead, and as we move forward we want to make sure members have ample opportunity to talk through our framework, ask questions, and offer feedback,” House Republican Conference spokesman Nate Hodson said in a statement.
Republicans are looking to pass tax reform legislation by the end of the year. With leadership looking to use the reconciliation process — allowing the upper chamber to pass the bill with just a simple majority — lawmakers will first have to pass a 2018 budget bill.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus said they will not support the budget bill until they are provided with more specifics on the tax reform blueprint.
