Jewish and Muslim fast-food customers filed lawsuits against two metro Detroit restaurants for allegedly serving them bacon.
Angela Montgomery, a Jewish resident of Sterling Heights, filed suit against Denny’s Aug. 31 via Dearborn attorney Majed Moughni after allegedly finding bacon in a vegetarian omelet she ordered Aug. 25, according to Detroit Free Press.
Days earlier, a Muslim couple from Dearborn, Askar Abubaker and his wife Hasinah Saeed, filed a lawsuit Aug. 22 against KFC for allegedly putting bacon on their sandwiches after they asked employees to keep the bacon off.
Montgomery said in her case the Denny’s employees apologized to her and explained that they kept their bacon container next to their vegetable container. The excuse was not acceptable, according to Montgomery.
“Why would you have the bacon next to the vegetables,” Montgomery said. “Don’t you know how many people don’t eat pork?”
“It’s like the most vile, disgusting creature on planet Earth that’s not supposed to go in your body, and I ate it. To me, that’s poisoning. I was poisoned,” Montgomery added.
Abubaker and Hasinah alleged that although the KFC employees initially apologized and offered to make a new sandwich, “employees were looking at us and smiling.”
Both plaintiffs filed their lawsuits in Wayne County Circuit Court, and seek monetary damages for bacon induced emotional and physical distress. The incidents are only the latest in a series of religiously related lawsuits over food, as Moughni also filed a lawsuit in May against Little Caesars, on behalf of another Muslim customer, alleging that their pepperoni pizza was not “halal” as advertised.
“At KFC we respect the religious beliefs of our guests of all faiths,” a KFC spokesman told DFP. “We believe this lawsuit was filed as a result of a miscommunication between the guest and our team member. We cannot comment further on pending litigation against one of our franchisees.”
