Six inmates took control of part of a maximum security facility in Arkansas Monday afternoon, stealing keys and holding three of the guards in the section.

The inmates reportedly stole the keys during a Monday recreation call, according to the state Department of Corrections. Police arrived to the scene soon afterward but are waiting to enter the prison. This is the second inmate attack in the Tucker, Ark., prison in recent weeks. Two inmates assaulted prison guards July 22 in an incident which forced guards to fire warning shots, Arkansas Online reported.

Corrections officials said that while the inmates are unable to escape the prison, they fear for the safety of the officers inside, according to the Arkansas Times. Officials also announced they are in contact with the inmates, and officers are standing by outside of the prison.

“We are following [department of corrections’] lead,” an Arkansas State Police spokesman told the Arkansas Times “We are staying outside until they are ready for [state police] assistance.”

Corrections officials have remained in contact with the inmates.

“As of 6:15 p.m., two of the correctional officers have been released with no major injuries. One inmate, who was not involved in the initial disturbance but did sustain injuries, is being transported to an area hospital in stable condition,” a corrections department statement said Monday night.
