Media Criticism: Politico Watch: The Most Biased Items Of The Week

The Daily Caller News Foundation has compiled a weekly list of examples exposing bias in Politico’s daily emailed newsletter that briefs subscribers on the most important news of the day.

This week, Politico Playbook’s writers, Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman, and Daniel Lippman took issue with White House Communications Director Athony Scaramucci’s “anonymous” source, declared President Donald Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner guilty, and lamented Trump’s inability to fulfill all his campaign promises in his first six months in office.

Below are the most egregious examples from the past week:

1. Seems like media skepticism of anonymous sources only occurs when it counters the Russian narrative, instead of thrusting it forward.

ON RUSSIAN MEDDLING: SCARAMUCCI: “You know, somebody said to me yesterday — I won’t tell you who — that if the Russians actually hacked this situation and spilled out those e-mails, you would have never seen it. You would have never had any evidence of them, meaning that they’re super confident in their deception skills and hacking.” … TAPPER: “Well, you’re making a lot of assertions here. I don’t know who this anonymous person is that said (emphasis mine), if the Russians had actually done it, we wouldn’t have been able to detect it, but it is the unanimous…”

2. It wasn’t just Trump’s victory, the GOP won the Senate and kept the House running largely on the repeal of Obamacare. And since when is repeal “gutting health care?”

BOSTON GLOBE’S ANNIE LINSKEY in BOARDMAN, OHIO: “GOP misread Trump victory as mandate to gut health care”: “There’s a deep love for Donald Trump here in the Mahoning Valley, once a reliably Democratic swath of northeastern Ohio that turned purple in the last election. But when it comes to Republicans in general, there’s far less affection from the base, particularly in the wake of a stalled agenda in Washington.”

3. Kushner has to blame others while “trying” and “attempting” to explain his innocence because Politico has already declared him guilty. So Mr. Mueller, you can stop investigating now.

Good Monday morning. BREAKING AT 6 A.M. — WHAT JARED KUSHNER IS SUBMITTING TO HILL INTELLIGENCE PANELS — 4 CONTACTS WITH RUSSIANS — ANNIE KARNI: “Kushner defends himself ahead of Senate intel meeting: ‘I did not collude’: In pre-written testimony Jared Kushner plans to submit before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Monday — a high-stakes, closed-door grilling session that is part of the investigation into possible collusion between Russian officials and the Trump campaign — the powerful son-in-law will try to explain away his four contacts with Russian officials (emphasis mine) during the general election and the transition as innocent interactions. In an 11-page opening statement provided to reporters early Monday morning ahead of his 10 a.m. appointment with the Senate, Kushner attempts to exonerate himself (emphasis mine), writing: ‘I did not collude, nor know of anyone else in the campaign who colluded, with any foreign government.’ Instead, Kushner paints a picture of himself as a loyal, overworked, under-experienced senior adviser to his father-in-law during a novice campaign that was never staffed up to win.”

“The former real estate developer also blames the glaring omissions on his security clearance forms — which did not originally include several meetings with Russian officials that have since come to light — on an honest mistake made by his assistant at the time.”

4. Well no, Amazon.com doesn’t own the Washington Post, but both have the same owner, Jeff Bezos. Worth pointing that out rather than implying they’re in no way connected.

THE PRESIDENT, LATE MONDAY NIGHT:@realDonaldTrump at 10:23 p.m.“The Amazon Washington Post fabricated the facts on my ending massive, dangerous, and wasteful payments to Syrian rebels fighting Assad…..” … at 10:28 p.m.: “So many stories about me in the @washingtonpost are Fake News. They are as bad as ratings challenged @CNN. Lobbyist for Amazon and taxes?” … at 10:36 p.m.: “Is Fake News Washington Post being used as a lobbyist weapon against Congress to keep Politicians from looking into Amazon no-tax monopoly?”

— FOR THE RECORD: Amazon doesn’t own the Washington Post (emphasis mine). We’ve never heard a Post reporter care one iota about promoting policies that benefit Amazon. … ALSO: @adamgoldman: “Did @realDonaldTrump just declassify @CIA program in Syria?”

5. Well, to be fair Ms. Karni, he has three and a half years to make good on them. I Don’t think he promised to get it all get done in his first six months.

MEANWHILE … BACK ON THE TRAIL — “At Ohio rally, Trump keeps making campaign promises,” by Annie Karni in Youngstown, Ohio: “President Donald Trump returned to this longtime Democratic stronghold on Tuesday night, sounding almost unchanged from the candidate who campaigned here last year, as he confidently doubled down on promises he has yet to keep” (emphasis mine).

6. No longer forcing people to buy health insurance they don’t want and allowing them to choose on their own, is why fewer people will have coverage. Not very pro-choice!

GET SMART FAST — “‘Skinny’ repeal could have big ramifications for Obamacare markets,” by Paul Demko: “Senate Republicans are hoping a ‘skinny’ repeal bill can solve their stalemate over dismantling Obamacare. But this partial Obamacare repeal — which is gaining steam in the Senate — could destabilize already wobbly Obamacare insurance markets, make premiums jump and increase the number of uninsured by millions, health policy experts say. … Killing the individual mandate would take away the primary mechanism that helped build the Obamacare insurance markets. The CBO estimated 16 million fewer people would have coverage in a decade without the individual mandate tax penalty in place (emphasis mine), based on an analysis requested by Senate Democrats.” http://politi.co/2uzjl1F

7. They’re nondisclosure agreements, actually. And perhaps you never seen one like this because the others haven’t involved the first family of the United States. Just saying.

TRUMP INC. — “Trump Organization employees must agree to keep info about Trump family secret,” by CBS News’ Julianna Goldman and Laura Strickler: “CBS News has obtained a new confidentiality agreement rolled out after the election. The Trump Organization is requiring employees at all levels to sign it, or else they will lose their jobs. Employees must agree to keep secret any information they learn about anyone in the ‘Trump family’ and extended family, including their ‘present, former and future spouses, children, parents, in-laws.’ ‘I have reviewed confidentiality agreements in international, family-run hospitality organizations and … I have never seen a loyalty code to a family like this,’ said Debra Soltis, who has specialized in employment law for more than 25 years” (emphasis mine)http://cbsn.ws/2v4XIH2
