O.J. Simpson is set to be released from prison in October after serving nine years behind bars for a botched robbery attempt, but he will soon be shackled by multi-million dollar civil judgement.
A court order requires that Simpson pay millions pertaining to the wrongful deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman, Reuters reports. The families of Brown and Goldman are also entitled to some portion of Simpson’s future earnings.
The former NFL star was acquitted of the murders of Brown and Goldman 20 years ago, in what has become known as the “trial of the century.” A not guilty verdict was not enough to let Simpson walk away clean, however, after a civil court found him liable for the murders and ordered him to pay some $33.5 million in damages. A subsequent court ruling upped the amount to roughly $58 million.
Simpson has a few ways to protect his assets in Florida, where he plans to live. For example, he could purchase a home in a state where his property would be protected from debt collectors.
Simpson was convicted of 12 felony charges in 2008 after he and a crew of armed men took some sports memorabilia worth thousands of dollars.
