New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was roundly criticized over the weekend after flying to Germany instead of attending a vigil for a slain New York City police officer.

De Blasio spent his Saturday thanking the local German police for their service in Hamburg, Germany, while the NYPD honored slain officer Miosotis Familia, who was shot in the head Wednesday.

“We’re not seeing any kind of leadership that comes out and explains that facts that are out there are not true,” Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, said Sunday. “The police are not your enemy. The police are not killing African Americans in alarming numbers the way that everyone thinks.”

Mullins told John Catsimatidis on “The Cat’s Roundtable,” a popular New York City radio talk show, that the city needs political officials that stand with police officers who are at a “breaking point.”

“New York City right now is mourning the loss of a police officer who was dedicated to the city of New York and we have our mayor who has just gone to Germany to join with protestors,” Mullins said.

De Blasio appeared at the outdoor “Hamburg Shows Attitude rally” Saturday, in protest of the G20 Summit. He announced the trip Thursday, just one day after Familia’s assassination.

The New York Post skewered the mayor for his trip to Germany.

President Donald Trump also highlighted the story, retweeting Fox News Monday morning.

Mullins warned that unless city officials support the police department and combat the anti-cop rhetoric, police officers may start to back away from situations that could lead to an uptick in crime.

De Blasio, who is up for re-election this fall, defended the trip. He said that the trip was planned weeks ago and that he decided to go after he learned he would be back in time for Familia’s wake and funeral (Monday and Tuesday respectively).
