Seven Navy sailors lost their lives when a container ship slammed into the side of U.S. destroyer, the Navy revealed.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with the ACX Crystal, a Philippine-flagged container vessel more than three times the size of the U.S. vessel, before dawn Saturday. The destroyer suffered significant damage.
In the wake of the accident, which is still under investigation, a search and rescue operation was launched to find seven missing sailors. As rescue workers gained access to flooded compartments, they discovered the bodies of the missing servicemen.
