G.I. Joe Goes Gay

The cover for the upcoming issue of comic book G.I. Joe oozes gay vibes as hairy men in sensual body positions tangle themselves on the page.

The issue hits in stores July 5, and features The Dreadnoks — a biker gang that regularly appears in the comic book — engaging in some sexy man-on-man wrestling.

The beloved comic franchise, which has been telling stories about the “Real American Hero” and comrades for half a century, asked acclaimed artist Ed Luce to design a cover for writer Aubrey Sitterson’s G.I. Joe #7 in early June.

Luce, who created the queer “Wuvable Oaf” comic book series, spoke with HuffPost Wednesday about his inspiration for the new cover. Luce said “G.I. Joe” writer Sitterson had a unique take on the familiar comic and was interested in pushing the boundaries of the concept.

“He’s also a fan of my comic Wuvable Oaf published by Fantagraphics, which features a group of large, very bear-y looking dudes as main characters,” Luce said. There was never any hesitation about the new cover “from the writer, editor or the publisher … they’re very progressive with their releases,” he added. He did say that he got a note on the first sketch requesting he tone down the Dreadnoks’ rears.

“I was giving them ‘Wuvable Oaf’ makeovers … the original characters were always a bit too manscaped for my liking … [so] I wanted to depict them grappling, getting really physical … gritty and sweaty,” Luce told Bleeding Cool. I wanted to capture an “entangling of bodies, capturing the violence … but in a sensual kind of way. So the hooking of limbs, some of the positions, are deliberately suggestive,” Luce explained.

He drew the cover in such a fashion because “now more than ever,” there needs to be more “sexual, sensual and queer imaginary” so people can look to comics for “comfort, connection and representation,” Luce said.

Comic readers can be sure to expect an exciting cover with the July issue.
