Activists Laud Students For Booing During DeVos Commencement Speech

Various activists and leaders were quick to praise students at a historically black university for booing Secretary of Education Betsy Devos Wednesday.
Activists, writers, and commentators took to Twitter to praise the students’ actions, calling them “protesters” who displayed courage for interrupting Devos’ commencement speech at Bethune-Cookman University.

DeVos gave a 25-minute speech at the university, during which some graduates turned their backs on her while she spoke. Students also booed loudly and told DeVos to “Go home!”

DeVos brushed aside the heckling in a statement released Wednesday night after her commencement speech.
“One of the hallmarks of higher education, and of democracy, is the ability to converse with and learn from those with whom we disagree,” DeVos said over Twitter. “While we may share differing points of view, my visit and dialogue with students leaves me encouraged and committed to supporting HBCUs.”
