Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California dismissed President Donald Trump’s assertion Mexico will pay for the border wall in a tweet Sunday.

Schiff, the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and staunch critic of Trump, argued taxpayers will end up stuck with the bill, which could cost upward of $20 billion.

“Let’s be honest @POTUS, Mexico will never pay for a wall. Taxpayers will bear the brunt of this and all your broken promises,” he tweeted.

Schiff’s comments come after Trump tweeted he believes Mexico will provide the funds for the project later down the road.

“Eventually, but at a later date so we can get started early, Mexico will be paying, in some form, for the badly needed border wall,” he said in the post.

Trump was vocal about the country paying for the wall over the course of his presidential campaign, but has since rolled back on the intensity of his rhetoric on the subject. He has stressed he believes it’s a critical component for the nation’s homeland security.

“The Democrats don’t want money from budget going to border wall despite the fact that it will stop drugs and very bad MS 13 gang members,” Trump tweeted.

The president has called on Congress  to attach language providing the funds needed for the border wall to a must-pass spending bill, telling the Associated Press he doesn’t expect it to be as costly as projected.

“Well, first of all, the wall will cost much less than the numbers I’m seeing. I’m seeing numbers, I mean, this wall is not going to be that expensive,” he told the publication.
