President Donald Trump will not label China a currency manipulator.

Trump has repeatedly criticized China for de-valuing its currency. He threatened to label China a currency manipulator on his first day in office on the campaign trail, but backed off some before entering the White House. He reprimanded China again in February, calling them the “grand champions at currency manipulation.” (RELATED: Trump’s Not Holding Back Against The ‘Grand Champions’ Of Currency Manipulation)

The president has changed his position though.

“They’re not currency manipulators,” Trump told the Wall Street Journal Wednesday.

He told reporters evidence shows China has not been manipulating its currency for months. Furthermore, he does not want to jeopardize bilateral cooperation on the North Korea issue. During a phone call with China’s president, the two leaders discussed options for addressing the “menace of North Korea.”

“I explained to the President of China that a trade deal with the U.S. will be far better for them if they solve the North Korean problem!” Trump tweeted Tuesday.
