A teenage boy in India reportedly woke up on the way to his own funeral, after physicians and his parents decided to stop treatment on an infected wound.

Kumar Marewad, 17, was bitten by a homeless dog nearly a month ago, causing him to come down with a high grade fever last week, the Times of India reports. Marewad’s parents rushed him to the hospital in Dharwab, Karnataka, where his condition continued to worsen.

Soon after being admitted to the hospital, Marewad’s infection spread from the bite throughout his entire body. Physicians put him on life support, but later told his parents that there was little hope he would recover.

Faced with nearly an impossible decision, Marewad’s parents decided to stop treatment and take their son home.

Once Marewad was presumed dead, the family quickly made funeral arrangements. “We had decided to take Kumar home after doctors told us his chances of survival were bleak once taken off the ventilator,” Marewad’s brother-in-law told reporters.

While in route to the funeral home, the teenager reportedly opened his eyes, gasped for air, and wiggled his arms and legs about to show he was indeed alive. Relieved at what appeared to be a miraculous occurrence, Marewad’s family rushed him to a nearby hospital where he remains on a ventilator.

His parents are asking for assistance to help fund his treatment, the New York Post reports.
