College Cancels Class For Social Justice Events

An Indiana university canceled classes on Valentine’s Day to host social justice events, and enrolled students who participated in a contest to win a $1,000 scholarship.

Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), a private Christian school, canceled class to host “Day of Courageous Conversations,” as reported by The Sojourn. The school hosted sessions titled “Loving Refugees,” “Supporting Even When We Don’t Understand,” and a “Privilege Walk,” according to the IWU Student Engagement app.

“Virtuous Feminism for All Christians” used a play named “Seven” and a book entitled “We Should All Be Feminists” to discuss how feminism fits into Christianity.

In the event entitled “Not Moving Together: Privilege, Perspective-Taking, and Candyland,” students explored how “otherness” impacts college experience via a board game. Meanwhile, the “Racial Injustice Bus Tour of Grant County” taught students about “structural and institutional forms of racism” and “the historical practices of geographic and neighborhood segregation,” according to the app.

Later Tuesday, the “Privilege Walk” demonstrated how “people benefit or are marginalized by systems in our society.” IWU also hosted an event concerning “how black lives still matter.”

For each session a student attended, IWU entered him or her in a lottery for a $1,000 scholarship to be used to study abroad.

Marion, Indiana, where IWU is located, aids refugees.

“Please join me in affirming that the IWU community does not condone or endorse exclusion of immigrants,” said IWU president Dr. David Wright, in a post responding to the 2016 election. “No politician or political doctrine teaches us to serve in this way.  We do this because it is what Jesus modeled, and what he calls us to do.”

“We are an inclusive community that loves and embraces one another despite differences of…immigration status,” read another part of Wright’s letter, a statement which could be interpreted as a tacit endorsement of illegal immigration.

Author Christopher Heuertz was one of the speakers at “Courageous Conversations” at the Christian school, and his Twitter account shows an ideology falling in line with the Valentine’s Day events.

Heuertz also seems to have some rather strong views on President Donald Trump.

Heuertz also noted on his Twitter that while the presidents of 50 universities have signed a letter against Trump’s executive order on immigration, “Christian colleges are inconspicuously silent.”
