Protesters effectively blocked new Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos from entering a Washington, D.C.-area public school, according to a local NBC news affiliate report.

The trip to Jefferson Middle School Academy was supposed to be DeVos’s first trip to a school in her official role, but protesters critical of her appointment blocked the entrance; security was forced to escort DeVos back to her car.

The protesters shouted “Shame,” as one of the individuals ran to block the SUV from leaving the area, holding a “Black Lives Matter” sign.

DeVos returned to the same school the next day with school district Chancellor Antwan Wilson, according to a tweet from Bruce DarConte.

The majority of the protesters Thursday didn’t appear to be interested in blocking DeVos, according to the report. Some signs said, “Welcome to our public school. It’s open to everyone!” and “Ms Devos: Our children are not props.”

DeVos didn’t make an official statement on the incident.
