Outside Group Launches Ad Campaign For Sessions Confirmation

The Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative advocacy group, has launched a six-figure digital advertising campaign backing the confirmation of Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions as U.S. attorney general.
The ad targets the Washington D.C. media market, as the Senate Committee on the Judiciary prepares to take up the Sessions nomination. Hearings before the committee are scheduled for Jan. 10 and Jan. 11.
The group praised Sessions for “fighting for his constituents and for the Constitution.”
“From his time as U.S. attorney to his tenure as attorney general for the state of Alabama, Jeff Sessions successfully prosecuted drug and violent criminals, corrupt politicians, and white collar offenders, and his record shows an absolute commitment to equal justice under law by putting the people first – not powerful special interests,” said Carrie Severino, JCN’s chief counsel.
Senate Democrats have signaled Sessions should expect a brutal confirmation process. Since the appointment was announced by President-elect Donald Trump, Democrats criticized Sessions for an alleged recalcitrance to bring civil rights cases forward on behalf of aggrieved minorities during his tenure as U.S. attorney, also citing purportedly racist remarks Sessions might have made in private. The NAACP and the Human Rights Campaign have joined Senate Democrats in denouncing the appointment, given his policy positions and an alleged history of discrimination.

Despite the aggressive posturing from Democrats, Sessions is likely to be confirmed to lead the Department of Justice. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell backed Sessions for the post, and no Republican has emerged to stymie his nomination. Vice President Joe Biden indicated earlier this month that he believes Democrats should approach the issue with an open mind, and attempt to accommodate the incoming president’s wishes.
