More Refugees Arrive in Italy This Year Than Ever Before

Italy has now set a new record for asylum seekers, with more refugees fleeing to its’ shores in 2016 than any previous year.
The European country has now taken in around 171,000 refugees from North Africa, topping 2014’s previous record of 170,000.
Though the number of refugees arriving in Europe by land has dropped recently, the number arriving by sea seems to be rising, as ongoing conflict in Libya drives many to take the perilous journey across the Mediterranean.
Some estimates put the number of refugees in the world right now at the highest levels in history, most coming from the Middle East and Africa.
