Islamic State fighters in Iraq set oil fields and a sulfur plant on fire in an attempt to halt the advance of coalition forces.

Retreating militants torched oil fields, tires and a sulfur plant as Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) continued their advance on the Iraqi city of Mosul. The fires created a thick smog across the battlefield, forcing ISF soldiers and U.S. troops participating in Operation Inherent Resolve to wear gas masks.

ISIS fighters set oil fields ablaze in Qayyarah, a city just south of Mosul, creating massive black fumes and scorching the earth. The inferno is expected to burn for days on end.

In Mosul, the terrorist group reportedly set fire to a sulfur plant, creating a poisonous cloud south of the city. As many as 1,000 people have suffered respiratory injuries as a result.

It is not the first time ISIS has used fire and smoke tactics against coalition forces. The terrorist group set several tire fires around the Syrian city Manbij in June, in a vain attempt to obscure the battlefield view of U.S. aircraft.
