A convicted felon attempted to assassinate two police officers while they were at a Vallejo, Calif., Starbucks Sunday evening.

Adam Powell, who has been convicted of robbery and other drug related offenses, opened fire on two officers. He ran away when his weapon malfunctioned, and officers pursuing him shot him three times, reports the LA Times.

According to police, Powell had walked by the Starbucks minutes before he tried to attack the officers, who were on break at the time.

“Actions certainly indicate that the officers were particularly targeted. He drove by the location in a vehicle several minutes before he presented himself at the front doors and leveled his weapon at the officers,” said Lt. Jeff Bassett.

The officers saw Powell walk into the Starbucks in body armor while carrying an assault-style rifle, Bassett said; Powell fled when he went to shoot the weapon and it did not work. The weapon had a high capacity drum magazine that could hold 70 rounds.

“The attempted assassination of two Vallejo police officers while on a coffee break underscores the extreme danger that police officers face on a daily basis,” Bassett said in a statement.

Powell is also linked to a shooting that happened earlier Sunday involving his 2-year-old son. The child was found wounded from a gunshot and is in critical condition. Police claim that while Powell is a person of interest in the case, “all possibilities are being explored.” They did not find a gun or Powell when they came to the scene.
