Trump Greased State Attorneys General Who Reviewed His Businesses

Republican nominee Donald Trump has repeatedly donated to attorneys general over the course of his career while they reviewed his businesses.

Trump, along with members of his family and business partners, donated to the offices of attorneys general of New York since the early 1980s, the Wall Street Journal reports. The majority of the donations were allegedly made while Trump’s businesses were being audited by state attorney general offices.

At a Michigan rally last Friday, Trump told an energized audience that he was “an outsider fighting for you.” This kind of behavior, however, seems to be fairly in step with the special interests that Trump bemoans consistently on the campaign trail.

Donations to attorneys general do not put Trump in the same boat as Hillary Clinton, whose scandals surrounding political donations and contributions to the Clinton Foundation are innumerable, according to an official Trump campaign response. Trump repeatedly explains that he uses political donations as a way of getting things done for his business. The business mogul told the Wall Street Journal in 2015 that “as a business man,” donating to politicians makes them “do whatever the hell you want them to do.”

He reportedly gave $140,000 to around a dozen state attorneys general from 2001 to 2004, the Journal reports. Many of these instances, were when Trump was in hot water over business dealings like Trump University and various hotel investigations.
