Clinton Expands Lead To Double Digits In Michigan

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton now has an 11-point lead over Republican nominee Donald Trump in a Michigan statewide poll published Thursday by the Detroit Free Press.

Clinton led Trump 43 to 32 percent, a result of increased support among black voters, women, and millennials. The last Detroit Free Press poll published Sept. 16 revealed a much closer race before the first presidential debate — Clinton only carried 38 percent compared to Trump’s 35 percent.

Trump also lost support among men and voters with no college education, traditionally his biggest supporters. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson earned 10 percent of the vote, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein earned 3 percent of the Michigan vote. Twelve percent remained undecided in the race, which means there is still a lot of wiggle room for either major party candidate.

“The race is much more settled now no matter what demographic group you’re looking at,” poll director at EPIC-MRA Bernie Porn, who conducted the poll wrote in the accompanying statement. “It’s hard to imagine (Clinton losing Michigan) unless Hillary has a health (or some other) issue … I think the perceptions of Trump are pretty baked in.”

Michigan hasn’t voted for a Republican nominee since 1988.

The statewide poll began Saturday and ended Monday, and included 600 likely voters. The poll carried a margin of error of 4 percent in either direction.
