Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban urged the European Union to start sending all illegal immigrants to an island or North Africa during an interview Thursday.
Orban and Hungary have strictly opposed the EU’s open border stance since the start of the migrant crisis. Hungarians will vote on whether the country should ignore the EU’s migrant quotas during a referendum Oct. 2, and Orban is pushing for quicker measures to remove illegal immigrants.
“This could be an island, it could be a coastal area in North Africa, but the security and supplies of that area must be guaranteed by the EU in its own interest,” Orban told Hungarian outlet Origo. “Those who came illegally must be rounded up and shipped out.”
Hungary has launched a “zero refugee” strategy to make sure no one enters the country illegally. Orban recently announced plans for a second border fence capable of holding back “hundreds of thousands” of people at once. The country is further looking to employ 3,000 border hunters to catch anyone that still mange to enter get across. (RELATED: Hungary Plans To Make Border Fence ‘Unbreakable’ For Refugees)
