Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton led Republican nominee Donald Trump by 7 points in a new national poll published Friday by McClatchey.
Clinton earned 48 percent, edging closer to the 50 percent mark in the national poll, while Trump earned 41 percent. The four-way race that included Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein reduced Clinton’s numbers to 45 percent, and Trump’s to 39 percent. Stein earned 4 percent and Johnson earned 10 percent.
Likely voters felt that Clinton would do a better job of handling a terrorist threat, with 52 percent reporting she would be better at the job. Fifty-one percent of likely voters preferred the Democratic nominee’s immigration plan, compared to 41 percent who supported the Trump immigration plan.
The latest analysis by statistics site 538 reveals that although Clinton leads in some major national polls, her ratings in several key swing states are falling dramatically. Clinton held double point leads in August in states like Virginia and Pennsylvania, but those leads are now well within range for Trump.
The McClatchy poll began Sept. 15, and continued through Sept. 20, and included 758 likely voters through cell phones and landlines. The margin of error for likely voters was 3.5 percentage points in either direction.
