Firefighters had to break out the jaws of life to get a Chinese man free from a toilet after he decided to dive in after his mobile phone.

A 40-year-old man in Guangzhou got his right hand stuck in a Chinese squatter toilet Wednesday after he dropped his phone, reports the South China Morning Post.

A little drunk and home alone, the man wandered into his bathroom Tuesday night. After he got stuck, he spent hours in the bathroom unable to get free, explained Sina Technology News.

It wasn’t until about 2:00 A.M. that his neighbor heard him calling out for help and went to check on him.

Shower gel was used as a lubricant to get the man’s arm out, but this approach ultimately proved unsuccessful.

The neighbor called all the emergency services. Firefighters showed up at 6:40 A.M. and found the man distraught and sprawled out on the floor.

Firefighters dismantled the man’s toilet, cracked open the pipes, and freed the squatter spelunker from his toilet. He was taken to the hospital immediately after. Doctors said his arm is a little swollen, but but otherwise in good health.

Such situations are apparently quite common, says Youth.cn. Lately, local firefighters have had to rescue more than five people from their toilets.
