North Carolina Republican Governor Pat McCrory is finally gaining ground with voters, according to a Civitas poll published Thursday.
McCrory made headlines earlier this year by signing into law a bill that would require transgendered people to use the bathroom corresponding to the gender assigned at birth. National backlash from private corporations and public interest groups fueled McCrory’s fall in statewide polls.
The current Real Clear average gives current state Attorney General Roy Cooper the lead at 48.7 to 44 percent. Cooper carried the lead in in the first week of September, earning seven points in the latest state Quinnipiac poll.
In contrast, the new Civitas poll showed McCrory with a two point lead, a strong turnover from Cooper’s prior seven point lead. McCory earned 45 percent of likely voters in the state of North Carolina, compared to Cooper’s 43 percent. Nine percent of voters remained undecided in the race.
It has been three months since Civitas last released a poll covering the governor’s race. June’s poll shows McCrory at 45 percent, and Cooper at 40 percent. Although McCrory is doing better in recent statewide polls, his lead actually dropped when compared to June’s Civitas poll.
Republican nominee Donald Trump also did well in the state poll, tying with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton at 42 percent. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson earning a paltry five percent in the poll. Nine percent of voters remained undecided.
The poll surveyed 600 likely voters that lived in the state of North Carolina, commencing Sept. 11, and contining through Sept. 12. The poll carried a margin of error of four percentage points in either direction.
