Two police officers were shot late Thursday night during a routine traffic stop in San Diego.

Both officers were rushed to the hospital. One died shortly after from his injuries, and the other had to undergo surgery to treat the wounds, according to NBC News.

The other officer reportedly survived the ordeal and the subsequent medical operation.

One of the assailants is in custody, but authorities say another person might be involved and was not apprehended. The San Diego Police Department warned people in the area to stay in doors while they survey the area for potential partners in crime.

The traffic stop occurred at approximately 11 p.m. (PT) in the southeastern section of the city, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told NBC News outside of the hospital.

“Other officers were in the area. They arrived shortly on the scene and found both of our officers suffering from gunshot wounds,” said Zimmerman.

The apprehended suspect was also sent to the hospital for a gunshot wound.

While the officers have not been identified, Zimmerman did note that the fallen officer was a husband and father of two.
