During her speech at the Democratic National Convention Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi didn’t mention one policy accomplishment of Hillary Clinton during her time in either the U.S. Senate or as Secretary of State.
The California Democrat instead opted to focus on how she believes it’s important to elect a woman to the White House.
“Hillary Clinton knows that this moment is not just about one woman’s achievement,”she said. “It’s about what electing a woman president will mean for achieving the dreams and hopes and aspirations of every woman, every daughter, every son, and every family, all across our land, for generations to come.”
Pelosi then went on to call for stronger gun-control laws, saying they need to work to lessen the power of the NRA.
“For the sake of the 91 Americans who are killed by gun violence each day, we must break the grip of the gun lobby on Congress and keep guns out of the hands of criminals and suspected terrorists,” she continued. “If you’re on the no-fly list, then you belong on the no-buy list. That is why Democrats, led by Congressman John Lewis, held our historic 26-hour sit-in in the Capitol. And we won’t stop until Congress heeds the will of the American people and disarms hate.”
The gun-control protest Democrats conducted on the House floor in June, violated a number of congressional rules, which GOP leadership is currently determining how to handle.
Pelosi stressed the significance of the election, naming a number policies that sharply contrast with the Republican Party’s agenda.
“We know what is on the line in what truly is the most important election of our lifetime: for the future of the Supreme Court, for the fate of a planet imperiled by climate change, for the sake of immigration reform, for the promise of an America that rewards hard work instead of those who exploit America’s workers, for women’s reproductive rights, equal rights, civil rights, and to do what is right for our service members, veterans and military families who have given so much for our country,” she told the crowd.
The former speaker of the House closed out her speech saying she is confident Clinton will win in November, and adding that she believes they can also take back the majority in the House and the Senate.
“Are you ready to work for a great Democratic victory? Are you ready to make history, electing Hillary Clinton President of the United States? I thought so. Onward to victory!” she said. “God bless you. God bless our men and women in uniform. God bless America.”
