An article published to The Huffington Post Monday claims that lying about climate change is okay, as long as it’s promoting the climate change agenda.
“In order for us to start acting on climate change then, maybe we need to tell a few lies,” Xavier Toby claims in his piece.
Toby goes on to say: “Advertising does lie to us all the time. The only difference with this issue is that instead of trying to convince us to buy stuff we don’t need and is often very harmful to us, by jazzing up the campaign against climate change, we’d be saving the planet and ourselves.”
Toby is not alone in his vocal opposition to truth. A study published in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics in February 2014 titled “Information Manipulation and Climate Agreements” says,”We find that the information manipulation has an instrumental value, as it ex post (Latin for ‘after the fact‘) induces more countries to participate in an IEA (International Environmental Agreement), which will eventually enhance global welfare.”
Since Toby says people are more concerned with popular topics of the day — such as Justin Bieber or the Kardashians — he thinks rebranding climate change as a “Bieber Kardashian sex tape” would help pique the interests of Americans.
Toby also thinks the majority of people simply aren’t smart enough to grasp the debate. “They are pretty involved and complicated concepts though,” he explains in his article “and if more people had the concentration spans to understand the benefits of tackling climate change in the first place, well we wouldn’t be in this mess.”
Despite repeated postings of his piece to his personal Twitter account, the public doesn’t seem to be “liking” his ideas too much. Since Toby originally wrote the piece on Monday, he has posted it to his Twitter three times for a total of zero retweets and one like. His Facebook page also has three postings for a total of three likes.
