Another DC Metro Smoke Incident Causes 45-Minute Delays At Rush Hour

D.C. Metro riders were greeted with 45-minute delays Tuesday as another track malfunction crippled the system, which is gearing up for 10-month long repairs in the coming weeks.
Two arcing insulators, which have been causing regular smoke and fire incidents in Metro tunnels, slammed red line passengers with major wait times during the rush hour commute. Trains are single tracking between Grosvenor and Friendship Heights station due to a malfunctioning power cable and the electrified third rail issues near Medical Center station, reports WJLA.

Commuters faced 45-minute delays and platform crowding, with red line trains running once every 18 minutes. Trains from Silver Springs are stopping at the Farragut North station and all outbound trains are bypassing the Bethesda station. Riders also reported single tracking between Van Ness and Dupont Circle stations due to a separate track malfunction, reports NBC Washington.

Scheduled track maintenance on the orange line between the Federal Center and Eastern Market stations is causing additional delays Tuesday. Service on the silver line is being greatly reduced, running between the Wiehle-Reston and East Falls Church stations. Metro officials are reminding riders ongoing speed restrictions around the McPherson Square station are also adding to delays.

Officials are slated to begin the 10-month long ‘SafeTrack’ repair plan at the beginning of June.
