Police say a man shot an Alabama cop in the face late Saturday before turning the gun on himself.
The Florence Police Department said one of their officers was shot in the face just after midnight Saturday. The officer fired back, but the shooter fled the scene. Police say they chased the suspect and found him dead, apparently of a suicide.
The Florence Police Department described the discovery of the alleged shooter in a statement:
Approximately 30 minutes after the initial shooting, officers located a vehicle matching the suspect’s vehicle description. A short pursuit ensued and ended in the parking lot of Chisholm Hills Church of Christ. Approaching officers heard a single gun shot from the vehicle. No officer fired their weapon at this second scene. The suspect was subsequently discovered to be deceased. The [State Bureau of Investigation] has taken over the investigation. Names will be released after all appropriate notifications have been made.
Authorities described the officer as “alert and talking,” despite being hospitalized for a gunshot wound to the head. The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the shooting.
