More than 100 state legislators signed an open letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Wednesday calling on him to reconsider his threats against states passing religious freedom legislation.
Republican State Rep. Scott Sanford, who led the effort behind Texas’ Pastor Protection Bill, wrote the letter asking Goodell to rethink his threat and offering to meet with him in person to talk it out. That letter was provided to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Georgia nearly enacted a religious freedom law to protect pastors and churches from participating in events or hiring people who don’t agree with their sincerely held religious beliefs, but a slew of businesses protested the law, saying it allowed for discrimination against the LGBT community. Goodell took the side of LGBT advocates, saying Georgia’s bid to host the Superbowl could be in danger if they pass legislation unfriendly to LGBT people.
“NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in March. “Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.”
Sanford’s letter, which includes state legislators from around the country, addresses the commissioner directly:
The letter comes after a string of religious liberty bills in North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi. Mississipppi’s governor signed a religious liberty bill Tuesday that allows residents to refuse service based on their beliefs about sex, gender and marriage.
Georgia’s legislature passed a similar bill in March, but the state’s governor vetoed it after many large businesses in the state voiced their opposition. While North Carolina’s governor signed a bill in March banning ordinances that allow transgender people to use restrooms that correspond with their “new” gender, but now the state is entangled in a lawsuit with LGBT groups and has seen two large companies pull out investment in the state.
“Government, unelected Justices, and big businesses should not be in the business of forcing individuals and entities to act in a manner that contradicts their conscience,” the letter says.
