The Washington, D.C., metro will close for 24 hours Wednesday beginning at midnight for what officials are calling a emergency investigation.

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld announced the closing at a 4:30 p.m. press conference. In a media advisory Metro officials said the presser would pertain to an “important announcement,” reports NBC Washington.

Officials will conduct an emergency inspection of Metro’s third-rail power cables. Wiedefeld said they will inspect 600 jumper cables across the entire metro area. Wiedefeld added there may be a “need for additional rail service outages” and officials will keep the public updated as they know more.

In the early hours of Monday morning’s commute a cable fire caused major delays on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines. Metro officials closed the Farragut West Station, a hub for business commuters in the city, for the entire day and all trains were single tracked throughout the city.

Officials shut down the metro Monday night at 9 p.m. to fix the damage and ensure an on-time commute for residents Tuesday morning. Officials said the fixes were successfully made and regular operations were restored Tuesday. Commuters are likely to be in a furor over the Wednesday closure, which will significantly impact Washington D.C. commuters.
