A 54-year-old French man is facing criminal charges for allegedly renting out his wife for sex over a four-year period.

The man in question is believed to have prostituted his wife to 2,742 men and made more than $7,600 a month doing it in the town of Meaux north of Paris.

The man has been taken to court for exploiting his 42-year-old wife and could be put behind bars for up to 10 years. He used his cellphone and four websites to arrange times for men to have sex with his wife, the Daily Mail reports.

The man cannot be named for legal reasons but has been released on bail. Prostitution is legal in France but pimping and operating a brothel are illegal.

The customers would be welcomed into the couple’s home and the man would often sit outside, sometimes with their five-year-old child for the duration the visit.

Emmanuel Dupic, prosecutor at the town’s criminal court, said:

The husband exercised a psychological power over his wife, preventing her from stopping submitting herself to the sexual needs of customers who were sometimes very tough.

The issue of prostitution has been increasingly prominent after Amnesty International sparked an intense debate Aug. 11 after calling for decriminalization.

The world-renowned human rights organization came to the conclusion that decriminalizing sex work is the best policy to keep prostitutes safe from both disease and violence.

Opponents claim that decriminalization will do little to stop coercive pimping and that law enforcement and legislators should do more tackle the demand for prostitution.

Amnesty’s recommendation elicited a furious response letter signed by leading celebrities including Kate Winslet, Lena Dunham and Anne Hathaway. “What your ‘Draft Policy on Sex Work’ is incomprehensibly proposing is the wholesale decriminalization of the sex industry, which in effect legalizes pimping, brothel-owning and sex buying,” the letter said.

But the celebs received a surprising offer in the wake of their letter. Denis Hof, who owns four brothels in Nevada, told The Daily Caller News Foundation Aug. 17 that the women are “ignorant and naive” about the realities of legal prostitution and welcome to visit his establishment to see legal prostitution in action.
