A police officer in Prince George’s County, Md. was charged with murder Tuesday after detectives said his mother may have used his department issued pistol to shoot his former girlfriend.

Officer Richard Conway’s mother was previously charged in the May 20 shooting of his children’s mother and her new husband, who died at a local McDonald’s, WUSA9 reported.

Upon learning that his mother, Caroline Conway, was involved with the murder and officer Conway was being investigated by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the Prince George’s County PD immediately launched its own investigation and suspended Conway.

“The charges against Officer Conway are deeply troubling, not just to me, but to all who wear our badge. It’s tragic that a man lost his life and another victim is hospitalized. We will provide whatever assistance is needed to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office in its investigation,” Chief Mark Magaw said at a Tuesday press conference.

His mother saw Conway’s wife and her new husband, Robert Mange, sitting in their car waiting to pick up the children she and Conway share custody of, police said. She got in the back seat of the wife’s car and began firing at the couple before fleeing the scene.

According to The Associated Press, Conway and his former girlfriend had been in the middle of an ongoing custody battle for their two young children.

Conway was off duty at the time of the murder and he was arrested Monday at the home he shares with his mother. His service firearm, which police suspect may have been used in the crime, has not yet been found.
