CNN White House correspondent John Harwood called President Donald Trump psychologically damaged Thursday after the president railed against his detractors.
“This was a very disturbing tableau for the country,” Harwood said after the president’s remarks addressing the Senate’s vote to acquit Trump.
The Senate voted 52-48 to find Trump not guilty on two charges — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
He added: “It was dark because he’s made clear that his mind is dark. This is somebody in deep psychological distress right now. Self-pitying, insecure, angry.”
Harwood’s comment came shortly after Trump’s speech Thursday at the prayer breakfast, which marked the president’s first public appearance since the end of the Senate trial Wednesday.
The president decried the House Democrats’ impeachment attempt, calling his detractors “corrupt.” Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah was the only Republican to vote to convict the president on the abuse of power charge.
“I believe that attempting to corrupt an election to maintain power is about as egregious an assault on the Constitution as can be made,” Romney said on the Senate floor Tuesday, explaining his vote.
Romney added: “It is a high crime and misdemeanor, and I have no choice under the oath that I took but to express that conclusion.”
This is not the first time Harwood floated the possibility that Trump is psychologically compromised.
“He did not look well to me in that press conference,” he said on MSNBC in 2018 when he was a reporter with CNBC.
“He was not speaking logically or rationally, it sounded as if he was making stuff up … and there was something about his affect which was oddly kind of languid from him. I don’t know what it means, but he did not look well to me,” Harwood added.
