The Washington Post called out global tennis star Serena Williams for her naked pregnancy photoshoot that attempted to glamorize pregnancy in a manner now becoming common in the celebrity community.
Serena’s August cover of Vanity Fair is about “voyeurism,” and WaPo writer Robin Givhan headlined her Tuesday article with, “Let Serena Williams’s naked pregnancy photo shoot be the last of its kind.”

“Yes, pregnancy is beautiful and powerful and worthy of celebration. You are womanly. You are phenomenal. God bless,” Givhan wrote. “But it has become virtually impossible for a celebrity to go through a pregnancy without getting naked for the cameras, her fans and — presumably — herself.”
Williams follows in the steps of Beyoncé, Demi Moore, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and many others who have “celebrated” their pregnancies by shedding their clothing.
Throwing these pictures onto major magazine covers and Instagram feeds that reach millions suggests “not only that one’s pregnancy is of interest to the public, but that it is also meaningful in some uniquely grand and sweeping way,” Gavin wrote.
“Celebrities have transformed pregnancy into another Instagrammable moment,” said Gavin, adding that it’s become “another business opportunity” by promoting pregnancy as a “magical, mystical, soft-focus experience.” Naked pregnancy pics are another way that “celebrities pony up a piece of themselves to the public,” she added.
