Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will have a transcribed interview before Congress on Oct. 24, the chairmen of two congressional committees announced Thursday.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy said Rosenstein will appear for a closed-door interview in a classified setting.
A transcript of the interview will be released to the public after the intelligence community has a chance to review the document for any classified information.
The announcement comes just hours after North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, a member of the Oversight panel, called on Rosenstein to resign over his failure to appear before Congress.
House Republicans have pressed for an interview with Rosenstein ever since The New York Times reported on Sept. 21 that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe claimed Rosenstein offered in May 2017 to wear a wire during meetings with President Donald Trump.
McCabe claimed in a memo that Rosenstein also suggested using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.
Rosenstein has alleged he was joking about wearing a wire after McCabe pushed him to open an investigation into Trump over the May 9, 2017, firing of James Comey as FBI director.
Trump has said he has no plans to fire Rosenstein, who is overseeing the special counsel’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.
The announcement says the two Republican chairmen of the committees and two ranking Democrats will be present for the interview, along with Rosenstein and a court reporter.
The statement suggests that no other members of the committee will be allowed to attend the interview.
