Exit Polls Indicate Voters To Repeal Amendment Restricting Abortions

Ireland voters passed by large margins a bill eliminating nearly all restrictions on abortion, an exit poll from The Irish Times suggests.

The ballot will pass 68 percent to 32 percent, topping off a long divisive campaign to keep the Eighth Amendment to Ireland’s constitution, according to The Irish Times/Ipsos poll

Four thousand voters were interviewed Friday as they left polling stations. Sampling began at 7 a.m. and was conducted at 160 locations across every constituency throughout the day.

Ireland’s Eighth Amendment outlaws and penalizes those who attempt or successfully abort an unborn child. Abortion advocates have called for the amendment to be changed, calling it “archaic and dangerous.” (RELATED: Irish Citizens Are Turning Up In Droves To Vote On Abortion Referendum)

The country saw an upsurge in voter registration ahead of the vote as roughly 125,000 voters were added to the list of voters expected to participate in the referendum. (RELATED: Young Americans Fight To Keep Abortion Out Of Ireland)

Fewer than three in 10 Irish support elective abortions — abortions for reasons other than to save the mother’s life, grave fetal abnormalities, and rape cases — according to Breaking News.
