Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz warned the media against using psychiatry to undercut or remove President Donald Trump and compared their efforts to tactics used by Communist Russia and China, on “Fox and Friends” Monday.
“It’s very dangerous,” Dershowitz said. “I’ve railed against the criminalization of political difference. It’s getting worse. The psychiatrizaton of political difference is much more dangerous. It’s what they did in Russia, it’s what they did in China, it’s what they did in apartheid South Africa. If you don’t like a candidate first lock him up. If you can’t lock him up, commit him to a mental hospital.”
Dershowitz referenced Yale University Professor Bandy Lee and said she is calling for the forcible confinement of Trump, if he shows signs of mental incompetence.
“There’s this professor at Yale Bandy Lee who has been leading the campaign, saying the president is dangerous. He has access to the nuclear trigger. We may even have to confine him against his will under a kind of commitment law,” Dershowitz said.
“Imagine how dangerous that would be,” he added. “Psychiatrists are notoriously bad at predicting violence.”
Dershowitz encouraged those who don’t like a like a particular candidate to simply vote for someone else, instead of trying locking them away in an asylum.
“I didn’t like what I saw necessarily so I did what you do In a democracy. You vote for the candidate you prefer,” Dershowitz concluded. “You don’t lock them up. You don’t put them in mental hospitals if you don’t agree with them. That’s so dangerous to democracy.”
