2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris announced plans Wednesday to ban imports of “AR-15-style” weapons should she be elected president.
In addition to the AR-15 import ban, the California senator said she would temporarily suspend all AR-type gun imports until the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATFE) can determine whether to permanently ban the weapons, Politico reported.
Harris’ remarks were made at a campaign stop in Nashua, New Hampshire, Wednesday morning.
The candidate warned she would resort to executive action if Congress doesn’t pass legislation to that effect within the first 100 days of a Harris administration.
“We cannot any longer afford to allow people to make this a partisan issue,” Harris said. “Those guns, those assault weapons, do not discriminate and determine, ‘OK, is the person pointing it at, is it a Democrat or Republican.'”

Her remarks come three weeks after the April 22 CNN town hall event where she first announced that she would give congress 100 days to “get their act together” to pass gun-control legislation.
She promised to use executive orders for several initiatives, including mandating gun sales background checks for anyone who sells more than 5 guns a year, holding gun manufacturers and dealers liable for legal violations, and expanding conditions for denying gun permits.
Harris also pledged to prevent people convicted of hate crimes from buying guys, ban high-capacity gun magazines, and to make gun trafficking a federal crime.
“When we look at the issue of assault weapons, let’s be very clear: Assault weapons are designed to kill a lot of people in a very short period time,” Harris added.
